But with shrinking funding, fewer volunteers, limited resources and capacity, and growing pressures, many organizations are struggling. Municipalities seem to be increasingly called on to offer support local non-profits, or to help clean up messes. This session offers a framework to help municipalities strengthen civil society organizations through good governance, transparent operations, and leadership development. Learning Objectives: Identify common organizational challenges local groups are facing and how these can impact communities Explore practical strategies municipalities can use to support local organizations and what to prioritize |

3:15 – 4:15 pm | You’ll Pay for this: Measuring and Reporting on Municipal Financial Health Michel Durand-Wood In order to provide critical life-sustaining services to the public not only today, but for generations to come, municipalities must be good stewards of the public purse over the long-term. We must be able to ask: can my municipality afford to continue doing this forever? The problem is that most people have no idea what the answer is. This session will show how to prepare and use simple financial health ratios to have better discussions with council and the public about municipal finances, taxation, debt, and infrastructure. |
4:15 – 4:30 pm | Rising to the Challenge – Summit Closing |
